A former mineral processing site in the middle of a treasured desert wetland habitat will soon be cleaned up and restored after a conservation group reached a deal to buy the 18-acre industrial site. The emergence of a new industry in Norrbotten In Luleå, LKAB is now planning for an industrial park for extracting critical minerals. It could create hundreds of new jobs. The facility will then be of great importance for Sweden’s and the EU’s self-sufficiency and reduced dependence on China and Russia when it comes to rare earth elements and mineral phosphorus fertilisers.
